Birth story - Kim and baby Emily

I bought the digital pack early on in my pregnancy. Being a first time mum feeling nervous about labour. After completing the course I felt prepared and ready for labour.

I had a very straight forward pregnancy until 31weeks. My hands, feet and face got very swollen along with feeling “funny” that’s the only way I can describe it. I didn’t feel really unwell just felt a bit rubbish. I also had blurry vision. I spoke to my midwife and they asked to me to come into hospital.

I was kept in for 5 days put on blood pressure tables. I had high blood pressure and protein in my urine. Pre-eclampsia. I was home for 2 days and then back in hospital. After being monitored and more tablets introduced they decided that it would be best for me and baby If they induced me.

Friday 25th October: they started with pessary after being monitored closely I became very shivery and tired. It was decided in the morning that I would need an emergency c-section.

I felt calm about this decision. It was best for myself and baby. I had never had any kind of operation before. I used my breathing techniques I learned, which helped massively. This wasn’t the labour I planned. My daughter was 7 weeks early.

When I was in the hospital they were amazing they prepared me for the fact my daughter would be small and would need to go to the special care baby unit. A doctor came to see me and my fiancé before she arrived and explained what would probably happen. What kind of care our daughter would probably need. So when she was taken to the unit we weren’t shocked by all the tubes and machines.

We got our tiny baby home after 2 weeks weighing a little 3lbs10oz. She’s now 10lbs4oz and doing amazing.

This course helped me remain calm even when things didn’t work out they were expected.
